School Rules! are CD-ROM-based programs that teach older children with autism and special needs (of cognitive age 8-18) acceptable behaviors and language using real-life video scenarios.

School Rules! Volume 1

Focuses on structured activities related to the classroom, group work, and physical education. It covers those parts of school life that are not part of academic programming, including hanging out with friends, hallway interaction, and the sensitive issues of PE locker room and personal hygiene.

School Rules! Volume 2

Focuses on social interpretation skills during unstructured times when social rules are most challenging. It is designed to help build social and organizational skills in children who run into difficulty dealing with lunch periods and hallway interactions between classes.

Main Features: 

These features are common to all versions:

  • It allows parents and teachers to tailor the video sequences to match each child's skill level.
  • The software allows children to see social situations re-enacted by peers and then choose the best thing to say or do next.
  • The environment is designed to enable children to become increasingly aware of social expectations and more successfully interact with other students.

School Rules! Volume 1 includes these additional features:

  • The video segments demonstrate how to cooperate and listen effectively, how to be a good sport, how to deal with bullying, how to develop a sense of academic responsibility, and how to ask for help when needed.
  • The tutorials are designed to enable children to quickly improve their skills in a broad spectrum of areas, including organization, listening, cooperating, asking for help, bullying, personal hygiene, sportsmanship, self-control, academic responsibility, transition, following directions and understanding the rules.

School Rules! Volume 2 includes these additional features:

  • Among the video scenarios presented are getting lunch, waiting in line, and eating in the school cafeteria, plus talking to friends or "just hanging out" in the hallway.
  • Each situation offers an opportunity for the child to build friendship and relationship skills and increase his or her social awareness.
  • It addresses time management, organizational skills and the use of schedules at school.
