Environmental Accomodations
Environmental accommodations are those forms of assistive technology that allow a person with a disability to monitor and control their environment. Some of these accommodations are structural and are not included in this tool. Electronic tools, however, are included.
- Alerting systems inform a person with a disability of events that should be responded to immediately. This includes doorbells and fire warnings, among others.
- Accommodations for functional activities allow a person with a disability to communicate from room to room, to call for help, and a wide range of other things that the person wants to do.
- Monitoring systems allow a person to see who is outside the door, or what is happening in a child's room.
- A person who lives with a disability may have an even more complex life than a person without a disability, and reminder systems can help assure that the person gets to appointments on time.
