Access to Math
Language is generally processed linearly. We read a sentence from one side to the other, and a line at a time. This makes accommodation for reading comparatively simple. Mathematics, however, once a person progresses beyond basic arithmetic, is much more challenging. In mathematics, equations may be worked from the inside out, or in columns of numbers. A different level of tool is necessary for mathematics than reading. While mathematics tools remain limited, the currently fall into two broad categories.
- Accessible calculators allow students (and other people) who cannot see to perform calculation like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and even perform scientific functions.
- Algebra and calculus require the derivation of equations, manipulating symbols in ways that are not linear. This can be particularly difficult for someone who cannot see the symbols. Accessible equation editors use various voicing strategies to make this sort of work possible.
