Keyboard Mouse Control (MouseKeys)
Some people have difficulty moving any desktop mouse or trackball, but may be able to accurately press and release an array of switches. For such users, a keypad/keyboard mouse may be more usable. In general, these provide (at a minimum) switches for each of the primary directions to move the mouse (up, down, left, or right). Some provide intermediate directions (e.g. up and left). An additional control provides mouse clicks.
These keypad mice can be found in a number of styles:
- Some keypad mice provide an add-on keypad or switch array that is connected in place of, or in addition to, the conventional mouse.
- Some keypad mice are integrated into the computer's keyboard. These may use the conventional keyboard, or an add-on adaptive keyboard.
- Some keypad mice are software enhancements to the built-in MouseKeys function of the operating system.
- Some keypad mice take the form of a multiple switch array the produces mouse movements. These allow any switches that the user is able to operate to provide mouse control.
