Tracking Finger or Stylus
There are a number of ways to "point" on information devices other than sliding a mouse over the desktop. For people who have difficulty connecting movement of the mouse with the action of the mouse pointer, tracking a finger may be more intuitive. This can be done in several ways:
- Touch screens make the entire display sensitive so that a person can touch and move the pointer or icons by sliding a finger over the surface.
- Trackpads operate similarly to touch screens, but the touch surface is separate from the display, commonly on the physical desktop or keyboard.
- Graphics tablets offer increased levels of control over both trackpads and touchscreens. Typically, the force used to press on the surface is detected and used for increased control. Other control options may also be included.
- For the person who has difficulty controlling with a finger, a stylus may be used. (These are common in graphics tablets.) A stylus has a tip that interacts with the control surface, and can be held in various splints for stability. A person may also need a holder for when the stylus is not in use.
