School Subjects

One of the major tasks of childhood is attending school.  At school, students are expected to learn basic information and skills necessary to participate in modern society.  These skills are commonly divided into broad categories:

• Arts education can include drawing/painting, music, acting, and other creative/expressive forms that do not involve language.
• Language arts includes developing an understanding of and foundational skills in how words are put together to express ideas.  This includes reading the language of others and creating language of one's own.
• Mathematics, according to Isaac Newton, is the language of the universe.  It is certainly essential to budgeting and money management, and forms a foundational skill to learn the sciences.
• The sciences tell us how the world around us works.  An understanding of basic science will allow a student to appreciate such things as the effect of garbage on the environment, and why leaving the refrigerator door open will not cool the house on a hot summer day.
