Alternatives to the Keyboard
A keyboard is primarily a tool for entering a long series of letters to form words, sentences, or commands for the device. For people with limited use of their hands, it can be a barrier to using an information device.
Alternative methods of text entry are built-in to many types of device. These include:
- Typing using a keyboard on the screen of the device using a finger or mouse pointer.
- Recognizing spoken language and converting speech to words on the screen.
- Using a small number of switches to act as the entire keyboard.
- Using a touch screen to type without the image of a keyboard.
