Make the keyboard easier to use
Many of the interactions with information devices occur through the keyboard: a physical array of keys. For experienced and practiced typists, this allows communication with the device about as quickly as many of us think. But for some, the keyboard is a barrier to information recording, and alternatives may allow easier or faster input. These built-in accommodations fall into some broad general categories:
- Alternative methods of entering text are available on many devices, diminishing the dependence on keyboard use.
- The way the keyboard responds to keypresses, and especially accidental keypresses, can be changed.
- Various shortcuts are available to make typing faster or more efficient, especially for words or commands that are used frequently.
- For most, the shift, control, and alt-key combinations require the use of two hands. Some adjustments can make shifted typing possible with only one hand.
